Late Flurry Leads #5 Syracuse to Win Over Field Hockey Team

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (9/18/11) - The 19th-ranked Princeton field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision at fifth-ranked Syracuse on Sunday as the Orange broke open a scoreless game with five goals in the final 15 minutes of the game.
Princeton held the Orange in check through the first half but Syracuse pressured Princeton late to score its goals. The game saw a scoreless first half in which Syracuse outshoot Princeton 3-2 and outcorner the Tigers 4-2. Syracuse had a corner and a shot saved early in the second half and Princeton earned a corner and had a shot saved in the 51st minute.
Syracuse earned its second corner of the second half in the 54th minute and maintained pressure, earning a penalty stroke in the 55th minute. Martina Loncarica took the stroke and scored to put her team ahead. Heather Susek made it 2-0 four minutes later when she scored on a rebound after Princeton goalie Christina Maida made an initial save.
The Orange would continue to pressure over the final 10 minutes and scored three more goals as Kelsey Millman, Leonie Geyer and Lauren Brooks added goals.
Maida stopped seven shots in the loss for Princeton as the Tigers were outshot 15-3 for the game. Syracuse earned eight corners to Princeton's three. Molly Goodman, Sydney Kirby and Rachel Neufeld had shots in the game for Princeton.
The Tigers fall to 2-4 overall with the loss. Princeton hosts Yale next Saturday in Ivy League action.
