September 24, 2011 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON (9/24/11) - Sydney Kirby scored two goals as the Princeton field hockey team topped Yale 3-2 in Ivy League play on Saturday at Class of '52 Stadium. Kirby's first goal came in the final minute of the first half and gave Princeton a lead it would not give up.
The Tigers outshot Yale 8-2 in the opening half and converted on their fifth shot of the game when Allison Behringer's blast from the top of the arc beat Yale goalie Emily Cain in the 18th minute. Princeton's lead didn't last long though as Yale evened the game at 1-1 less than two minutes later on a goal from Jessie Accurso. As play came into the Princeton circle, the ball rolled through to Accurso on the far post for the goal.
Despite holding the shot edge, it looked as though the teams would head to the locker rooms at half time deadlocked at one goal piece, but a rush upfield from Allison Evans in the final minute helped Kirby give Princeton a 2-1 lead at the break. Evans carried the ball up the near side of the field and fed Kirby in the circle for her second goal of the season with 23 seconds left in the opening half.
Kirby and Evans again paired up in the 57th minute to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Tigers. Princeton played the ball upfield out of the reach of a charging Kirby. The ball came to Cain in the Yale goal who kicked it out, but Kirby picked off the pass at the top of the circle. She fed it to Evans, who quickly gave it back to Kirby for her third goal of the season.
Yale would scored the final goal of the game on a direct corner in the 67th minute on a sweep shot from Erin Carter, but the Bulldogs would get no closer and the Tigers defense held Yale without a shot over the final few minutes.
Princeton goalie Christina Maida stopped four shots for the Tigers while Cain made six saves in the Yale goal. Princeton outshot Yale 17-9 while both teams had three penalty corner opportunities.
The Tigers are now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League. The win snapped a three-game winless streak for Princeton, which now sits a game behind a first-place tie between Columbia and Dartmouth in the Ivy League standings. Princeton visits third-ranked Maryland on Tuesday.
