September 25, 2011 | Men's Soccer
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (9/25/11) - Senior Antoine Hoppenot scored on a penalty kick but Monmouth's Ryan Clark would score twice in the final 30 minutes to give Monmouth a 2-1 win at the Great Lawn on Sunday, Sept. 25.
All the action came in the second half, as the first was scoreless with neither team putting a shot on frame.
The first shot on goal of the game came in the first minute of the second half. Monmouth's Clark ran down the left flank and Princeton keeper Max Gallin came out of the net to challenge and made the save on the shot.
Princeton's first scoring opportunity came in the 53rd minute when Hoppenot turned on the wheels with a run down the left flank. He got in next to the 18-yard box and blasted a shot in on net that was saved by Alex Blackburn. Less than a minute later freshman Cameron Porter rifled a shot from 20 yards out that was scooped up by Blackburn.
Alex Weidman had a chance on an open net in the 57th minute. He picked up a through ball and Gallin came out to stop the shot. Gallin blocked the shot, but the ball kept rolling in front of Weidman towards the open goal. Defenders Mark Linnville and freshman Andrew Mills were able to prevent the open shot as they forced Weidman to kick out of bounds and back in for a Princeton goal kick.
Hoppenot broke away and had a solid 1v1 with the keeper when he was pulled down inside the box. The official signaled for the penalty kick and delivered a red card to Anthony Vasquez. Hoppenot scored on the penalty kick in the 65th minute.
Down a man for the remainder of the game, Monmouth would score both its goals with nine field players.Clark would knot the game at 1-1 three minutes later. He was 30 yards out when he sent a low shot in that went between Gallin's legs and rolled into the back of the net.
The Hawks nearly scored on a corner kick when Kevin Davis had a shot from close range stopped by Gallin but it popped free and a scrum for the ball ensued. The official would signal a stoppage for the dangerous play.
Fifty-two seconds later Monmouth would get the go-ahead goal on a set piece. Clark took a free kick from just outside the top of the 18-yard box that bent around the wall and into the right upper 90.
Princeton had a chance for the equalizer in the 88th minute with a free kick at the near corner of the box. Instead of shooting directly on goal, Hoppenot crossed to Benedict who didn't get a good touch and the ball sailed wide and out of bounds.
Junior David Dubow hit the post with 30 seconds to play and Princeton got a corner kick but couldn't make anything of it as time expired.
Monmouth finished with 12 shots to Princeton's nine, while the Tigers won the corner kick battle 6-4. Blackburn would make two saves for Monmouth and Gallin stopped three for Princeton.
Princeton falls to 1-4-1 on the season while Monmouth improves to 6-2.
