Tigers Look to Retain Crown as Ivy Play Begins at Dartmouth

PRINCETON, N.J. (9/29/11) - The Princeton men's soccer team will begin its quest to retain the Ivy League crown when it kicks off Ivy League play at Dartmouth on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 3:30 p.m.
The game will be webstreamed on GoPrincetonTigers.tv for subscribers, and live stats will also be available free of charge.The defending Ivy League champion is looking to end a four-game losing streak as the Tigers head to Hanover with a 1-5-1 record. The team most recently lost to No. 15 St. John's in double overtime. Freshman Cameron Porter and senior Antoine Hoppenot both have six points on the season, with Porter scoring three goals and Hoppenot picking up four assists and one goal. Juniors Matt Sanner and Mark Linnville have two points apiece. Junior Max Gallin has started all seven games and has made 25 saves on 37 shots for a 1.58 goals against average and a .676 save percentage.
Dartmouth enters the first Ivy weekend with a 2-3-2 record. The Big Green posted a 2-1 win in their last game against UMass last Saturday which snapped a three-game winless skid. Seven of Dartmouth's 10 goals have come in the first half, while its opponents have scored six of their 10 regulation goals in the second half. Lucky Mkosana leads is the team's top scoring threat with four goals and nine total points. Alex Adelabu and Patrick Murray have both scored twice and have five and four points, respectively. Noah Cohen has played every minute in goal and has made 27 saves on 38 shots for a 1.47 GAA and a .711 save percentage.Princeton leads the series that began in 1921, 37-19-7. The Tigers won the last meeting, a 3-0 shutout on Oct. 2 on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. In that game Josh Walburn had a career outing with five points. Princeton came out of the gates in control of the game and took four shots in the first 14 minutes of the game. The stingy Tiger defense held Dartmouth without a shot on net until the 58th minute. Walburn scored the first of two goals in the 35th minute when he put away a cross from Antoine Hoppenot. Less than a minute into the second half, Walburn scored again. Mark Linnville launched a throw in into the box where Colby Hahn and Hoppenot both batted the ball around before Walburn headed the ball into the net. Manny Sardinha tallied the final goal in the 71st minute when he put away a Walburn rebound. Dartmouth finished the game with a 16-14 advantage in shots on goal. Princeton had seven shots on goal to Dartmouth's four.
Ivy League Update
As Ivy League play begins this season, let's take a look at how the team's have been playing.
Brown is receiving votes in the latest NSCAA poll and has a 5-3 overall record. The Bears lost a 2-0 game to No. 13 Boston College on Tuesday which snapped a 17-game unbeaten streak on Brown's home field. TJ Popolizio leads the league in points with 13 in eight games. Sam Kernan-Schloss has the best GAA in the league at 0.67. Brown hosts Columbia at 4 p.m., on Saturday.
Columbia is was predicted in the preseason to be a dark horse in DI soccer this year. The Lions are 3-5-1 on the season. Columbia won its first three games but has hit a road block, going 0-5-1 since the New Mexico Tournament.
Cornell is having a great non-conference season. The Big Red is 4-1-3 and has posted four shuouts this season. Cornell is unbeaten in its last seven games. Cornell brings the lowest goals against average to the Ivy table, giving up six in eight games. They open at Penn on Saturday night.
Harvard heads into the weekend with a 2-5-1 mark. Four of Harvard's five losses have been one-goal losses, while both wins were by a 1-0 score. Keeper Austin Harms ranks third in the league in save percentage and fourth in GAA. Harvard hosts Yale at 7 p.m.Penn is also receiving votes in the latest NSCAA poll with a 5-1-2 mark. The team is riding a four-game unbeaten streak. The Quakers led the Ivies in shots averaging 20 per game and has scored the most goals in the league with 17. They also have the second-best GAA in the league. Three players are in double digits in points, Duke Lacroiz, Stephen Baker and Christian Barreiro.
Yale enters the weekend 4-4-1. The team is coming off of a 1-0 double overtime loss at No. 1 UConn. Yale has collected the second-most goals in the league with 16. Brad Rose leads the Ivy League in assists with five and is third in points with 11. Goalkeeper Bobby Thalman is the league leader in saves and save percentage, making 49 stops in nine games for an .845 save percentage.
