Back from its trip to Southern California over the Labor Day weekend, the Princeton women's soccer team will venture closer to home this weekend to play a pair of Big East teams on their home fields at Seton Hall and Villanova.
Princeton holds an 8-1 all-time mark against Seton Hall and a 13-7-1 record against Villanova. The Seton Hall series resumed last season with a 3-1 Princeton win in the first game in the series since 2002. Sunday's game will be the first time any of the current Tigers have faced Villanova as the teams last met in 2007 on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium for a 0-0 tie while Roberts Stadium was being built.
Both opponents are off to a strong start in the new season and each is coming off playing in an invitational event last weekend. Seton Hall lost to Army 1-0 last Friday before defeating Colgate 1-0 Sunday. Villanova had a 3-2 double-overtime win over VCU Friday before tying William & Mary 2-2 Sunday.
Princeton's top two scorers from last season each had a goal over the weekend, with junior Jen Hoy scoring at Long Beach State and junior Caitlin Blosser putting the Tigers on the board at Cal State Northridge. Junior Claire Pinciaro started between the posts for Princeton in each contest before being relieved late in the Northridge game by rookie Darcy Hargadon.
Five Seton Hall players have split the team's six goals with sophomore Katlyn Ritter holding the team lead at two. junior Jennifer Pettigrew has played every minute in goal, accruing an 0.74 GAA. For Villanova, senior Katie Ryan has scored six of the team's 14 goals while sophomore Jami Kranich has been the only goalkeeper while compiling a 1.52 GAA. The Wildcats will have an Ivy League weekend, facing Penn Friday at PPL Park in Chester, Pa., the home of the MLS's Philadelphia Union.
The games will be Princeton's third and fourth on a five-game road string to start the season. The Tigers will head to William & Mary for a Friday night game on Sept. 16 before opening its home schedule on Sept. 18 at La Salle.
