Fencers Wrap Competition at NAC in Portland

Competition finished at the North American Cup event in Portland, Ore., Monday with several Tigers turning in high finishes.
Sunday, Soren Thompson '05 finished seventh of 208 epee finishers in the Division I competition, while junior Jonathan Yergler finished 19th and Tommi Hurme '08 placed 42nd. All three Tigers went 5-1 in the pool portion of the competition.
In the direct elimination portion of the epee event, Hurme was seeded 31st but ran into fellow Tiger alum Thompson in the round of 64 and lost 15-12. Yergler advanced to the round of 16 before falling to Cody Mattern 15-11, while Thompson also made it to the round of 16 before losing to Weston Kelsey 15-10.
Also Sunday, freshman Sharon Gao finished 20th in a junior foil competition featuring 103 entrants. Gao went 5-1 in pool play and advanced as far as the round of 32 before falling to Ohio State rookie Nina Stackhouse 15-9.
Monday, freshman Katharine Holmes went 6-0 in the pool portion of the junior women's epee competition before finishing sixth in the 109-woman event. In the direct elimination portion, Holmes advanced to the quarterfinal before losing to St. John's rookie Isis Washington 15-8.
The current Tigers will fence under the Princeton banner again during the first weekend of February at the Northwestern duals event.
