Tennis Programs Prominent in ITA Rankings
January 04, 2012 | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
Both the Princeton men's and women's tennis programs are featured prominently in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's initial rankings of the spring season.
Princeton's women are ranked 50th in the ITA's national top 75 as one of five Ivy League teams in a list that includes No. 30 Yale, No. 53 Brown, No. 56 Dartmouth and No. 64 Harvard. Only the SEC, Pac-12, ACC, Big 12 and Big 10 have as many as five teams in the top 65.
While no Ivy Leaguers are in the singles rankings, Princeton has two of the Ivy's eight doubles teams in the national top 60. Hilary Bartlett and Lindsay Graff check in at No. 51, and Katie Goepel and Rachel Saiontz are ranked at No. 55. Brown, Columbia and Harvard have one ranked doubles foe apiece, while Yale has three.
On the men's side, Princeton checks in at No. 61 as one of three ranked teams along with No. 45 Cornell and No. 70 Harvard. Princeton also has one of the eight Ivy Leaguers ranked in the ITA's top 125 as Matija Pecotic is No. 46.
The top ranking of any Ivy Leaguer across the men's and women's team, singles and doubles rankings goes to the men's doubles duo of Matt Siow and Matt Spindler, who are ranked No. 11 nationally after their run to the consolation title at the USTA/ITA national indoor championship in early November.
As the new year brings the return of the ITA rankings, it will also bring the start of the spring season for both the men's and women's teams. Princeton's men will begin at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend hosted by No. 11 Texas A&M on Jan. 28 and 29. The Tigers will open against No. 16 Mississippi State before facing either the host Aggies or No. 64 Purdue, while the women will start by hosting Temple on Feb. 1 in Jadwin Gym.
