Fencers to Open Season Saturday at Penn State Open
November 02, 2012 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
The Tigers will be competing against fencers from Cornell, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn, Temple and Yale. Competition, which is entirely individual, will take place Saturday and Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. both days.
Princeton is coming off its runner-up finish at the NCAA Championship last March, its best outcome since the current men's/women's combined format began in 1990.
Four of Princeton's six men who competed at the NCAA finals are back, including NCAA epee champion Jonathan Yergler, who became the first Tiger fencer to win an NCAA individual title since 2001. On the women's side, all six of Princeton's NCAA competitors are back, led by sophomore epeeist Katharine Holmes and senior saberist Eliza Stone, both of whom placed third at the NCAA finals in March.
Princeton's first team competition will take place at Vassar on Dec. 1 for a day of dual meets.
