Clarkson Ends Men's Hockey Unbeaten Streak with 3-2 Game
February 10, 2012 | Men's Ice Hockey
POTSDAM, N.Y. (2/10/12) - The Princeton men's hockey team had its four-game unbeaten streak halted at Cheel Arena as Clarkson earned a 3-2 win on Friday, Feb. 10. Sophomore Andrew Calof assisted on both of Princeton's goals.
The teams traded goals in the first and second periods, but it would be Allan McPherson's goal at 8:04 in the third that would decide the game.
Junior Michael Sdao gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead with a 5x3 power-play goal at 10:01 of the first frame. A face off was taken in the left circle and picked up by Calof. Calof sent the puck across the ice to senior Derrick Pallis who sent across the blue line to Sdao. Sdao fed Calof on the extended red and he circled before sending the puck back to Sdao at the point who fired it into the back of the net.
Exactly five minutes later Louke Oakley tied the game with help from Nick Tremblay. Tremblay intercepted the puck in the neutral zone, which set up a 1-2 between he and Oakley as Oakley went top shelf at the right post. The pair had a similar play minutes earlier but Oakley sent in a low shot that was kicked away by sophomore netminder Sean Bonar.
Sophomore Kevin Ross regained the lead for Princeton at 3:36 of the second as the Tigers came out of the intermission on fire. Princeton won all three face offs and wouldn't let Clarkson maintain possession. Senior captain Marc Hagel set up the Tigers' second goal as he won the puck in the left corner and dished the puck off to Calof. Calof sent it across the ice to Ross who was calling for the puck on the right side as he was left unattended. Ross rifled a shot that made its way through traffic and past Paul Karpowich.
Less than two minutes later the Green & Gold got the equalizer from Sam Labreque on the power play. Labreque shot from the top of the point and went glove side on a pass from Ben Sexton on the left boards. Oakley earned the secondary assist.
McPherson would score the game winner midway through the third when he put away a Patrick Marsh rebound. Marsh wrapped around the back of the goal and Bonar stopped his chance on the right post. The puck popped into the right corner and was grabbed by Sexton who fed McPherson for the goal.
Bonar was pulled for the extra skater for the final 53 seconds. Princeton couldn't get a shot off before calling a timeout with 14.5 seconds left. With a face off to the left of Karpowich, Princeton won the draw and Calof gave the Tigers a final chance with a shot at the right post before the whistle blew.
Bonar made 25 saves in his first start in seven games. Karpowich stopped 24 shots on the other end.
Princeton had 13 shots in the final period to Clarkson's six, but the Golden Knights finished the game with 28 saves to the Tigers' 25. Princeton was 1 for 7 on the power play and Clarkson was 1 for 5.
Princeton falls to 7-11-6 on the season and 5-8-4 in the ECAC to move into 10th in the standings. Clarkson is now 14-12-5 overall and 8-6-3 in the league for fourth place.
