CANTON, N.Y. (2/11/12) - Senior Marc Hagel scored the lone goal for the Princeton men's hockey team as the Tigers fell 4-1 to St. Lawrence on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Appleton Arena.
Greg Carey gave St. Lawrence a 1-0 lead at 12:46 of the first frame, as he converted on the Saints second power-play opportunity. George Hughes broke his stick on a hard shot from the right point and the puck popped over to Carey near the boards. Carey fires the puck past sophomore netminder Sean Bonar for the goal.
Princeton thought it had tied the game with 1:49 remaining in the period until the officials reviewed the goal and called it off. Sophomore Matt Farris brought the puck around the back of the net and a scramble in front but Matt Weninger down on his stomach. The Tigers celebrated the goal but when Weninger stood up, the puck was wedged in on the left post, leading the officials to check the video and ultimately calling the goal off.
Sophomore Jeremy Goodwin had a shot from the point that almost made it through traffic in front of a screened Wenginger at the end of the Tigers' first power-play opportunity. Sophomore Andrew Ammon redirected a great shot by junior Rob Kleebaum that hit the post on the tigers' second power play.
The Tigers came out looking hungry at the start of the second period and Princeton would got the equalizer just 2:40 in. Sophomore Eric Carlson faked a shot skating in from the left side and then blistered one towards the net that was redirected by Hagel at the far post.
St. Lawrence would regain the lead at 6:23 with its second power-play goal. Kyle Flanagan fired a shot from the right point over the shoulder of Bonar after getting a pass from Carey. Chris Martin got credited with the secondary assist.
The Saints nearly got another goal as Bonar had to make a save on the left side of the net which left the right side open for Martin, but a defender kept Martin at bay. Just seconds later Weninger denied Hagel on a 1x1 chance.
St. Lawrence would score twice more in the third period. Riley Austin got the puck in the slot and back-handed a pass to Kyle Essery on the right side and Essery scored glove side at 9:48. Essery set up the Saints final goal at 17:29 when he sent a centering pass to Patrick Doherty.
St. Lawrence finished with 35 shots to Princeton's 28. The Saints were 2 for 4 on the power play while Princeton went 0 for 7.
Weninger made 27 saves in goal for the Saints who improve to 12-15-3 on the season and 8-9-1 in the league.
Bonar made 31 stops, including some impressive saves, despite the loss. Five minutes into the game, he made an impressive glove grab on a shot by Pat Raley. He made another huge glove save on a 1x1 with Carden after a turnover in the neutral zone about seven minutes into the middle frame. Bonar made another big save on Raley as he slid out to his right to squash the shot less than a minute into the final period.
Princeton falls to 7-12-6 overall and 5-10-3 in the ECAC. The Tigers will travel to Union & RPI next weekend, Feb. 17 & 18.
