February 17, 2012 | Men's Ice Hockey
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (2/17/12) - The talk at the end of the game wasn't about No. 8 Union defeating Princeton men's hockey 3-0. It was the unbelievable game by the Tigers' netminder junior Mike Condon. Condon made a career high 57 saves, crushing his previous best mark of 43 set earlier this season at Yale.
Condon's night ranks fourth all-time in Princeton history. The last time a Princeton goalie made 50+ saves in a game was Eric Leroux when he stopped 52 at Harvard in a 5-4 overtime loss on Feb. 10, 2006. Walter McDonough holds the record of 61 that was stopped in a game versus Rensselaer in 1984.
Midway through the first period Union had a 10-2 shot advantage. Princeton started to settle in and had long stretches of possession and some great opportunities to score.
Princeton's best chance came after freshman Tom Kroshus one-timed a shot that was saved by goalie Troy Grosenick. Senior Marc Hagel looked for the rebound on the left post and the puck squirted out to junior Michael Sdao who ripped a shot that was nearly knocked in by Hagel who still working the front of the cage. Sdao would later leave the game with an upperbody injury.
Union was able to get on the scoreboard at 1:53 of the second period when Nolan Julseth-White sent in a shot that rebounded out to the left post where Kevin Sullivan picked it up and sent it to Daniel Ciampini in the slot who fired past Condon.
Condon made one of his more impressive saves five minutes into the middle frame. Greg Coburn sent a shot in from the right circle and Condon stopped it but the puck came free and he flipped to his right and covered before the puck could cross the line.
The Tigers had a great first power play as they didn't allow the Dutchmen to set up. Kelly Zajac tried to fake out Condon with a wraparound but Condon stopped the shot on the near post.
With six minutes left in the second, Condon put on a show but making a great toe save on the far post and than immediately flew to the other save to stop a shot by Shawn Stuart. He made some great moves again on Princeton's second penalty kill as he was on his back followed by a quick stick save to deflect the puck wide. Seconds later he nearly did a split to get a leg save on the right post. At the end of the second, he had made 41 saves.
Princeton spent eight minutes in the third period killing off penalties, which didn't give the Tigers enough time to get on the board.
Union took the 2-0 lead at 2:48 when Shayne Gostisbehere scored from Zajac. Condon was screened on the shot that came from the left point.
One minute and 10 seconds into a penalty on Hagel, Union's Coburn was called for boarding with a face off coming to the left of Grosenick. Princeton called a timeout and pulled Condon for the 5x4. Kroshus followed up with a shot wide and a shot blocked. The Tigers would get the 6x4 50 seconds later. Matt Farris had a shot blocked and a scramble ensued in front of the net before the puck skidded out into the corner.
Union ended up gaining control and Josh Jooris fired into the empty net at 18:36 to seal the win for the Dutchmen.
Grosenick finished the game with 18 saves as Union improves to 18-6-7 overall and 12-3-4 in the ECAC. Union was 0 for 7 on the power play while Princeton was 0 for 2. The Tigers are now 7-13-6 overall and 5-11-3 in league play.Princeton will take on Rensselaer tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Tigers will be without sophomore defender Jeremy Goodwin, who received a game disqualification at the conclusion of the game.
