Calof Scores Twice as Men's Hockey Falls to Yale, 5-2

PRINCETON, N.J. (2/24/12) - Sophomore Andrew Calof scored both goals for the Tigers, but the a two-goal third period would give the Yale Bulldogs a 5-2 win over Princeton in men's hockey on Friday, Feb. 24 at Hobey Baker Rink.
The teams traded goals within the first five minutes of the game but Yale would take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission with a late-period goal. In the second, the teams scored exactly two minutes apart. Yale would score twice in the third.
Yale capitalized on its first power-play opportunity of the game at 3:20. Brian O'Neill picked up a pass from Jesse Root on the right dashers and made a move around his defender and put the puck in the slot for Antoine Laganiere.
Less than two minutes later Calof would score his first of the night to knot the game at 1-1. Freshman Aaron Ave kept the puck in the offensive zone and junior Will MacDonald pushed it towards the goal where Calof was all alone and went low glove side on goalie Nick Maricic.
Yale took the lead at 16:51 right after a missed 2 on 1 effort. Andrew Miller got the missed shot behind the boards and fed O'Neil on the right post. O'Neil put it in the paint and Gus Young put it away on the left pipe.
Calof had a beautiful goal at 11:28 of the second that would tie the game at 2-2. He skated down the right side and faked out Maricic, after looking like he was going to shoot to far side used some crafty stickwork to put the puck behind Maricic on the near side. Sophomore Jeremy Goodwin and Ave would get the assists on setting up the play in the defensive end.
Yale would quickly regain the lead however at 13:28 when O'Neill beat junior netminder Mike Condon 1x1 going five hole.
Princeton was able to stave off a difficult stretch of being down a man after receiving back-to-back penalties. After killing off 44 seconds of a hooking call on senior Marc Hagel, sophomore Kevin Ross was called for tripping, setting up one minute and 16 seconds of 5x3 for Yale. The Tigers' penalty kill was up to the challenge and wiped out both penalties without giving up a goal.
Laganiere tallied his second of the night with a rebound on a shot by O'Neil to give Yale the two-goal lead at 14:47. O'Neil was delivered a long pass down the ice and was able to recover from a Michael Sdao check to put one on net. The rebound bounced out to the right side where Laganiere was able to over the outstretched glove of Condon.
Anthony Day would seal the win with an empty net goal, just three seconds after Condon skated to the bench for the extra attacker. Princeton dumped the puck down but Yale could gain control of it and fired from center ice into the empty goal at 18:34.
Condon finished the game with 38 saves, including 22 in the second half, when Princeton spent six minutes on the penalty kill. Maricic stopped 26 for the Bulldogs who are now 10-10-1 in the ECAC and 13-13-2 overall.
Yale outshot Princeton 43-28 and was 1 for 5 on the power play, while Princeton was 0 for 4 on the man advantage.
Princeton falls to 8-14-6 overall and 6-12-3 in ECAC Hockey to sit in 10th place, along with RPI with 15 points. The Tigers can finished anywhere from 10th to 12th in the standings.
Princeton has one more chance to get league points when it hosts Brown tomorrow, Feb. 25, in the regular season finale at 4 p.m.
