Offensive Outburst Leads Men's Hockey to 6-2 Win

TROY, N.Y. (2/18/12) - The Princeton men's hockey team earned a crucial ECAC Hockey win with a 6-2 victory over Rensselaer on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Houston Field House.
Sophomore Andrew Calof, sophomore Andrew Ammon and junior Rob Kleebaum all scored twice while senior Marc Hagel and junior Eric Meland had two assists apiece.
The teams traded goals in the first period before a four-goal second period for the Tigers came them a 5-2 lead. Princeton would add one more goal in the third period to ice the win.
The Tigers struck first at 11:56 when Ammon scored right off a face off. Berger took the draw and the puck was sent into the slot where Ammon turned and fired behind goalie Bryce Merriam.
Mike Bergin knotted the game up at 16:14 when he fired a shot from the right post that went blocker side on Princeton netminder Mike Condon. Johnny Rogic and Josh Rabbani would earn assists on the goal.
Kleebaum regained the lead for Princeton at 3:36 when he put away a pass from Meland with sophomore Matt Farris earning the secondary assist. Less than two minutes later Calof would beat Merriam to make it 3-1. Junior Will MacDonald dug the puck out of the corner and gave the puck to Hagel who sent a pass across the slot to Calof who took it blocker side.
RPI would replace Merriam with Scott Diebold following the Tigers' third goal.
Rabbani would inch his team within less than two minutes later with help from Justin Smith and Curtis Leonard.
Calof scored his second of the night at 10:50, an unassisted goal. He broke up a pass in the neutral zone and skated in 1x1 and beat Diebold with a back hand to the top shelf.
Kleebaum and Meland teamed up again for the Tigers' fifth goal, a power-play goal, at 15:02 with Hagel collecting his second helper of the evening.
Ammon would get his second goal of the night at 8:11 of the third when he put away a cross-ice pass from Berger, the same duo that gave the Tigers their first goal.
Merriam picked up the loss allowing three and making six saves. Diebold made 10 saves and allowed three before being replaced by Jeremy Coupal. Coupal, a senior, made his first career appearance and made one stop in the final 5:49 of the game.
Condon made 24 saves in the win as the Tigers improve to 8-14-6 overall and 6-11-3 in the league.
Rensselaer falls to 8-21-3 overall and 6-12-3 in the league.
