March 10, 2012 | Softball
Game 1: Kent State 9, Princeton 7 (8 inn.)
Princeton rallied from a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh with three straight two-out hits to score three runs and tie it, but Kent State had the better eighth inning and won 9-7 in one extra frame.
Senior Nicole Ontiveros continued her hot start to the season, going 4 for 4 in Friday's opener while rookie Alyssa Schmidt went 3 for 4, each with an RBI.
Kent State's (7-9) Abbey Ledford landed the big blow against Princeton (1-4) reliever Meredith Brown (0-3), hitting a two-out, three-run home run to put the Flashes ahead 9-5. Princeton rallied in the bottom of the eighth as both Ontiveros and Schmidt had their RBIs in that inning before the comeback finished two runs short.
Game 2: Maryland 7, Princeton 3
A five-run fifth inning keyed Maryland as the Terrapins pulled ahead of Princeton on the way to a 7-3 win in Friday's nightcap.
Princeton (1-5) led 3-1 after the top of the third, getting three hits in the inning and capitalizing on two Maryland errors. The Terrapins (12-6) pulled within 3-2 in the fourth, and the fifth saw four hits and two Princeton errors add up to five Maryland runs.
Liza Kuhn (0-1) went all six innings for the Tigers, while five Princeton players split the team's five hits.
Princeton will play its third and fourth of its five weekend games Saturday, first against Rhode Island at 10 a.m. and then against Maryland at 3 p.m.
