Close at the Top After Day 1 at NCAA Fencing Finals

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Princeton and St. John's are the top five teams after Thursday's first day at the NCAA fencing championships, and not much is separating the five.
Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State each rolled up 51 bout victories through the first four of seven women's rounds to be contested over the first two days, while Princeton had one win fewer at 50. St. John's is close behind at 48 wins.
Princeton's two epee fencers carried the first day. Katharine Holmes finished 11-3 with nine bouts to go Friday, while Hannah Safford was close behind at 10-4. That puts Holmes third among the epeeists, and the top four after the 23 bouts are contested will compete for medalist honors Friday afternoon. Stafford stands seventh after the first day.
Princeton's foilist entries, Ambika Singh and Eve Levin, are 11th and 13th after eight and seven wins, respectively. Eliza Stone picked up nine wins and Diamond Wheeler had five for the saberists, putting Stone in the No. 4 spot at present while Wheeler is 16th.
As all of Princeton's entrants have already fenced their teammates in their same weapons, nine points will be available to all six Tigers for a total of 54 points up for grabs in Friday's action.
