Softball Sweeps Dartmouth to Open Ivy Play
March 30, 2012 | Softball
PRINCETON -- Alex Peyton and Liza Kuhn combined to pitch 12 shutout innings before Dartmouth got on the board against the Princeton softball team as the Tigers swept the Ivy-opening twinbill 4-0 and 5-2.
Princeton improved to 5-16 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy, while Dartmouth fell to 7-10 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Game 1: Princeton 4, Dartmouth 0
Alex Peyton and Dartmouth pitcher Kristen Rumley dueled for five scoreless innings before Princeton broke through with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 4-0 win.
The Tigers used five singles and a walk to score the runs before Rumley (3-4) left the game and teammate Hillary Barker ended the inning.
Peyton (2-7) gave up four hits, three of which were singles, while striking out five and not walking a batter. Candy Button led Princeton with a 2-for-3 first game, chipping in two of the team's for RBIs.
Game 2: Princeton 5, Dartmouth 2
Liza Kuhn continued the shutout streak through five more innings, more than enough time for Princeton to build an early lead on the way to the 5-2 win.
Dartmouth starter Hillary Barker (2-4) left after giving up a double to Alyssa Schmidt that started the bottom of the third with Princeton already up 3-0, and the Tigers got to reliever Evan Gray for two more runs.
Alex Peyton's RBI-double in the third inning gave her three RBIs on the day after already having blasted her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to put Princeton on the board 2-0 in the first.
Kuhn (2-6) carried the 5-0 lead into the sixth before running into trouble, giving up two walks, a double and a single to start the inning. That led to Dartmouth's two runs, but Kuhn stranded two Big Green runners on base to preserve a three-run lead.
Dartmouth again threatened in the seventh, starting with three straight singles. A groundout and a sharp double-play ball to the left side got the Tigers out of it.
Princeton will host Harvard in a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at 12:30 p.m., weather permitting.
