Heavies Have Strong Showing vs Georgetown, Syracuse In Season Opener

The Princeton heavyweight crew won its annual season-opening scrimmage against both Syracuse and Georgetown Saturday morning on Bud Smith Memorial Race Course on Lake Carnegie. The fourth-ranked Tigers swept all four races, including a tight victory in the second varsity competition.
The varsity eight, led by senior captain Ian Silveira, took its race in 6:11.8, while Syracuse took second in 6:18.5. Georgetown finished third in 6:25.4.
The second varsity had the closest race of the day, but its time of 6:19.6 was good enough for the win. Syracuse was second in 6:20.9, while Georgetown finished well behind in 7:00.3. The Princeton 3V also grabbed a win in 6:38.8, while the second freshman boat placed second in the race in 6:42.3.
The freshman eight made its collegiate debut an impressive one, winning in 6:24.8. That time was 4.8 seconds faster than Syracuse, which placed second.
"It was a solid start for the squad this weekend," head coach Greg Hughes said. "There is still lots of work to do, but it looks like the group is prepared for that work and I am looking forward to seeing what we can do in the weeks ahead."
The day was a productive one for all three programs, as each was able to also get in several shorter, scrimmage-style races during the morning session, and more in the afternoon.
Princeton will return to Lake Carnegie next weekend when it takes on both Penn and Columbia for the Childs Cup, the oldest trophy in collegiate rowing. Princeton has won this regatta twice in a row, and it can finally gain an edge in the all-time series over Penn with a victory. The Tigers and the Quakers have each won 44 times since the regatta was first held in 1879.
