Softball to Visit Hofstra Tuesday
April 22, 2012 | Softball
The Princeton softball team will head to Hofstra for its final non-league game of the regular season Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The Tigers enter the game at 14-27 overall after splitting a four-game series over the weekend at Columbia. Hofstra, which has won seven in a row, is 28-13 and 13-0 in the Colonial Athletic Conference, rebounding from an 0-9 start to the season.
Princeton and Hofstra met 25 times between 1992 and 2001 with Hofstra winning 15 of those meetings, but the teams didn't meet again until 2010. The series resumed on Long Island that year with a 6-2 Hofstra win, and a rainout washed out the return trip last season.
Junior Olivia Galati has been successful all around for the Pride this season, throwing 174 2/3 of the team's 267 1/3 innings with a 21-5 record and a 1.12 ERA. She has also hit .368, starting all but three of Hofstra's 41 games. Senior Erin Wade has thrown 92 innings, compiling a 7-8 record and a 3.04 ERA. Juniors Tessa Ziemba (11) and Becca Bigler (nine) have combined for 20 of the team's 33 home runs.
Princeton counts senior Kelsey VandeBergh, on a seven-game hitting streak, as its top hitter this season at .333, while junior Alex Peyton's seven home runs are a team best. Peyton and classmate Liza Kuhn are both 6-11 on the season in the circle, with Peyton's ERA at 3.30 and Kuhn's at 3.72.
After the Hofstra game, the Tigers will revisit Ivy League play when Cornell comes to the Class of 1895 Field for doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at 12:30 p.m. each day.
