Shon Moves On to Match Play at USGA Women's Amateur Publinks Championship
June 20, 2012 | Women's Golf
NESHANIC STATION, N.J. -- With a 4-under 68 Tuesday, Princeton rising junior Kelly Shon tied for fifth in the 156-player stroke-play field at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Neshanic Valley Golf Course in New Jersey.
Shon will move on to the 64-player match play tournament, where she gained the No. 5 seed. She will face 60th-seeded Leilanie Kim, a Canadian native who is a rising sophomore at Idaho, in a 9:48 a.m. first-round tee time Wednesday.
Match play will have two rounds Thursday and two rounds Friday before the final two will battle Saturday.
Lisa McCloskey, who just finished her eligibility at USC, finished atop the stroke-play leaderboard at 7-under, while Shon followed her 72 Monday with the 4-under score Tuesday to surge up the board.
Shon's score was a vast improvement from her stroke-play finish a year ago, when she was one shot better than the cut line to advance to match play. Shon was the 58th seed in match play and was defeated in the first round 2&1 by Sally Watson, now a rising senior at Stanford. A year later, Shon was nine shots better than the cut line, which fell at 5-over.
