Kelly Shon Wins Match Play Opener at USGA Women's Amateur Publinks
June 20, 2012 | Women's Golf
NESHANIC STATION, N.J. -- Princeton rising junior Kelly Shon defeated Leilanie Kim of Canada, a rising sophomore at Idaho, 2 and 1 to open match play at the USGA Women's Amateur Public Links Championship Wednesday morning.
Shon will face Rachel Morris, a rising junior at USC, in an 8:30 a.m. tee time at Neshanic Valley Golf Club. The winner will tee off at 1:30 p.m. in the round of 16.
Shon won each of the first two holes over Kim and made it a four-hole lead by winning holes six and seven. Kim kept Shon from pulling away by winning No. 11 and No. 15, but Shon won on No. 12 to gain what was then a three-hole lead.
Once Kim won on No. 15 to pull within two holes, the players halved the next two holes, with the split on No. 17 clinching the win for Shon.
The victory puts Shon one win past where she finished a year ago, when she fell to Sally Watson, a current rising senior at Stanford in the first round of match play.
