Men?s Water Polo Defeats Mercyhurst for Third Place at Southerns
November 10, 2013 | Men's Water Polo
The Princeton men's water polo team concluded the Southern Division Championship with a third place finish following its 9-7 victory over Mercyhurst Sunday.
The Tigers (19-5) will have a two-week break in play before heading to the CWPA Championship at Brown from Nov. 22-24 with a berth to the NCAA tournament on the line.
The Princeton backline faced a lot of pressure from the Mercyhurst attackers, but goalie Alex Gow's season-high 17 saves headlined a solid defensive effort in the cage.
On the other end of the pool, Princeton took a quarter to get the offense going. A six-goal second quarter would be enough to take control for good and lift the Tigers to a 7-3 lead at halftime.
Mercyhurst's second half comeback run saw the Lakers go on a 4-2 run, but it was not enough to hand Princeton consecutive losses.
Thomas Nelson led the offense with three goals, while Drew Hoffenberg and Jamie Kuprenas added two goals each. Kurt Buchbinder, Sam Butler and Hoffenberg each had two assists.
