Holmes, Van Brummen Compete at Junior World Fencing Meet in Croatia

Only a few weeks after the Princeton fencing program won its first combined NCAA championships, a pair of women's epeeists headed to Porec, Croatia to compete in the Junior World Championships April 10-11.
Holmes placed fifth and Van Brummen placed 34th of 119 competitors once the pool bouts and direct elimination bracket were complete.
In Van Brummen's pool, the Princeton freshman went 5-0 against opponents from five countries, including Kazakhstan, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Croatia and Italy. Holmes, a sophomore, also went 5-0, knocking off opponents from Spain, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Romania and Cuba.
Once the elimination bracket began, Van Brummen, who earned a 10 seed, was upset by South Korea's Sera Song, the 55th seed, 15-13 in the round of 64. Holmes, the seventh seed, knocked off Spain's Berta Pena in the round of 64, 15-12, followed by Estonia's Veronika Zuikova in the round of 32, 15-10, and avenged Van Brummen's defeat to Song, 15-12 in the round of 16. But the run came to an end for Holmes in the round of eight against the No. 2 seed, Argentina's Isabel Di Tella, 12-10.
Holmes earned All-America honors this season, placing fifth at the NCAA Championship. Van Brummen traveled to San Antonio but did not compete as Holmes and NCAA runner-up Susannah Scanlan held Princeton's two competition spots.
