Top-Ranked Harvard Lightweights Retain Goldthwait Cup Over Princeton, Yale
April 27, 2013 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Harvard capped a perfect regular season by winning the varsity eight race in 5:51.0. Second-ranked Yale pushed the Crimson and took second in 5:52.4, while a young Princeton varsity eight took third in 5:57.0.
Princeton moved up one spot in the second varsity race, which was won by Harvard in 6:04.0. The Tigers took second in 6:07.4, more than three seconds faster than third-place Yale.
The Princeton freshman eight also had a second-place finish, though it was to Yale this time. The Bulldogs won the novice competition in 6:10.3, while Princeton was only two seconds off the pace (6:12.3). The Tigers topped the Crimson boat by more than two seconds.
Princeton also had third-place finishes in the third varsity eight (6:23.1) and the second freshman/novice four (7:42.5).
Princeton will still have one more tune-up race before the Eastern Sprints, and it will feature one of the top-ranked teams in the country. The Tigers will take on No. 3 Columbia and No. 11 Delaware next Saturday on Lake Carnegie. The regatta is scheduled to begin at noon, and it will follow the Content Cup heavyweight competition between Princeton and Brown (9 am), as well as the open women's dual race with Michigan (10:20 am).
"The guys won't have too much time to dwell on the results today," head coach Marty Crotty said. "We have a tough race next week with No. 3 Columbia and Delaware. Delaware has an undefeated frosh crew that just beat the Penn Frosh."
