LEONIA, N.J. – The #6 Princeton University men's lightweight rowing team opened 2025 on a high note Saturday as it retained the Diamond Challenge Trophy against #4 Dartmouth and the Campbell Cup against #10 Columbia at the National Collegiate Lightweight Invitational.

"This weekend's success in retaining the Campbell Cup and Diamond Challenge Trophy can be attributed to one simple word: TEAM," said Head Coach Matt Smith. "While the trophy's reward the Varsity 8+, they would not have been in a position to win those races if it weren't for every person on the team raising the standard both on and off the water. We learned a lot this weekend and are excited to get back to work. All four eights made good strides forward but also can look at points in their racing this weekend that they would like to improve. The National Collegiate Lightweight Invitational is an amazing dress rehearsal for Eastern Sprints because it allows us to get in two full 2km races. Columbia University and their staff and volunteers did an amazing job of putting that regatta together in very challenging weather."

The morning session saw the 1V (6:27.36) retain the Campbell Cup against Columbia (6:34.81) and the 2V (6:40.07) finish ahead of the Lions (6:55.01). The 3V (7:04) finished ahead of Georgetown (7:12.21) while the 4V (6:34.58) crossed the finish line before Navy (6:26.72) but after the University of Pennsylvania (6:36.00).

The Tiger retained the Diamond Challenge Trophy in the afternoon session when the 1V (6:15.14) took down Dartmouth (6:22.31). The 2V (6:27.90) was also victorious against the Big Green (6:36.68). The 3V race saw the Quakers (6:40.90) and Navy (6:42.71) finished ahead of the Tigers (6:50.47) while in the 4V race Princeton and Navy tied (6:21.27), both finishing in front of Penn (6:34.52).
