Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. ET, the 69th-ranked Princeton women's tennis team will face No. 1 Stanford in the third meeting with the Cardinal in program history.
The teams played in the first round of the 1983 NCAA Tournament, a 9-0 Stanford win, and met again in the regular season in 2009 at Stanford, a 6-1 Cardinal win. The series' third meeting is also a homecoming for Princeton head coach Laura Granville, who was a two-time NCAA individual champion at Stanford before turning professional. Granville returned to Stanford after her career and completed her degree in 2012.
Both teams are coming off opening wins over local rivals, Princeton 6-1 over Temple in Jadwin Gym and Stanford 7-0 over UC Davis. The match begins a busy week for Princeton, which will head home for two weekend bouts, Saturday against St. John's and Sunday against Denver.
Though Tuesday's match will be Princeton's first against an ITA-ranked opponent on the young season, the Tigers played six ranked foes last season, headed by No. 3 Duke. Of the eight Tigers to play in Saturday's season-opening match against Temple, six are returners from last season, led by junior Lindsay Graff at first singles and first doubles. Graff teamed with Alanna Wolff, ranked 62nd in the nation by the ITA, at first doubles while Wolff played second singles.
