Richardson Opens USTA/ITA Regional Play With Two Wins
October 17, 2014 | Men's Tennis
Princeton's two entrants in the qualifying singles draw at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional in New York started tournament play Thursday, with senior Dan Richardson gaining entry into the main draw and freshman Diego Vives coming up one win short.
In a field of 48 players that was whittled down to 12 qualifying spots, Richardson defeated Kent Mukai of Boston College and Eric Ambrosio of Quinnipiac in straight sets to gain one of the bids. Vives defeated Michael Ngyuen of Army in his first match, but Stony Brook's Alexandre Felisa defeated Vives to gain entry into the main draw.
That main draw will begin Friday with seven Tigers among the 100 in the draw. Senior Zack McCourt is one of the draw's top four seeds, with sophomore Tom Colautti in the 9-16 range, classmate Josh Yablon in the 17-32 range, and freshmen Luke Gamble and Kial Kaiser, sophomore Alex Day and now Richardson unseeded.
Princeton has three doubles pairs in that 56-duo draw, with McCourt and Day seeded in the 5-8 range, Colautti and Gamble in the 9-16 range, and Yablon and Kaiser unseeded.
