Shon '14 is Co-Medalist at Maryland Open, Preps For Q-School Finale
October 21, 2014 | Women's Golf
With an even bigger tournament to come in the not-too-distant future, Princeton alumna Kelly Shon '14 finished as co-medalist at the Maryland Women's Open Tuesday at the famed Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.
Congressional hosted three U.S. Opens - most recently in 2011 - and the 1976 PGA Championship on its Blue Course, and the Maryland Women's Open took place on the club's Gold Course.
Shon finished at +2 alongside two other players, Texas Tech alum Ulrika Van-Niekirk and Central Florida alum Ashley Grier, to win co-medalist honors at the event before Shon fell short in a playoff. Shon's round of 71 Monday, a card that included five birdies and two of those on par-3s, stood as the event's low round until former Georgetown women's golf coach Patricia Post turned in a 70 Tuesday.
Results for the event can be found here.
The win comes less than two months before Shon heads to a tournament that could earn her a ticket to the LPGA Tour. Already having cleared two of the three stages of the LPGA's Q-School, Shon and the rest of the field at the LPGA International Hills and Jones Courses in Daytona Beach, Florida will be competing for an as-yet-undetermined number of LPGA Tour cards. Just by making it through the first two stages, Shon has already earned Symetra Tour status.
The third stage of Q-School, which will run from Dec. 3-7, will feature 90 holes with a top-70 cut to be made after 72 holes.
During her time at Princeton, Shon qualified individually for three NCAA Regionals and played her way into the 2013 NCAA Championship, becoming only the second Tiger and second Ivy Leaguer ever to do so. Shon was twice named Ivy League Player of the Year and was the 2013 Ivy League individual champion.
