Women's Golf, Tenley Shield Sweep Titles at Lehigh Invitational
October 27, 2014 | Women's Golf
Thanks to all five Tigers in the lineup and one who wasn't, the Princeton women's golf team will end the fall season as winners.
Tenley Shield, playing at the event as an individual and not part of Princeton's scoring five, edged teammate Alexandra Wong in a tiebreaker with a lower second-round score to win the individual title at the Lehigh Invitaitonal, which wrapped Monday.
Going into the event, Princeton decided its scoring five based on the results of the Princeton Invitational, its last meet Oct. 18-19, which included Hana Ku, Jordan Lippetz, Alexandra Wong, Sydney Kersten and Caroline Araskog. Princeton coach Erika DeSanty, who recorded her first win as the team's head coach with the event victory, placed Shield in the tournament after Lehigh opened an individual's spot and Shield had finished sixth among Tigers at the Princeton Invite.
That invitation turned out to be a chance for redemption for Shield, who averaged an 84 at the three-round Princeton Invite.
"I just had a much better mental game this weekend," Shield said after her win, which began Princeton's fall break after midterm exams last week. "(Midterms being over) definitely helped me just to be more stress-free, but I also was just much more relaxed on the course. The entire time I didn't let anything get me down for the most part. Both days, I didn't have great starts, but I didn't let that affect me later on."
Princeton placed all six players in the event in the top 10, with Shield, Wong and Ku comprising the top three. Lippetz tied for fifth, Araskog for seventh, and Kersten finished 10th.
Shield and Wong finished at +6, Shield carding back-to-back 75s and Wong turning in a 76 Monday after a 74 Sunday. Ku was just two shots behind after a 75 and 77 to finish at +8. Princeton trimmed its team total by 15 shots from Sunday to Monday, with Monday's 299 standing as the team's second-best round of the year after a 298 at the fall-opening Mason Rudolph Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt.
The strong Monday performance allowed Princeton to double its lead over host Lehigh from 12 shots after Sunday's round to 24 shots by tournament's end.
Shield and freshman classmate Caroline Araskog each matched their best rounds of their young Princeton careers, Shield with a 75 and Araskog with a 77, while junior Sydney Kersten set her Tiger best with a 73.
The event has traditionally been a successful one for Princeton, which has had the individual champion in all four years it has entered the event while winning two team titles, putting the 2014 title alongside 2012. Kelly Shon '14 won the individual title a year ago, while Shon won a tiebreaker over teammate Anna Jang '13 to win in 2012 and Alexis Etow '07 won the 2005 individual title.
