October 04, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
Princeton waited all of September to finally make its home debut, and the Tigers treated an energetic Dillon Gym crowd to one of its best performances in years. A brilliant first set and strong play throughout the lineup led Princeton to a 3-0 sweep of Cornell Friday night.
The 25-7, 25-16, 25-20 win moves Princeton to 7-5 overall, 2-0 in the Ivy League.
Junior Kendall Peterkin, who ranks in the national Top 25 in both kills and points, led the Tigers with 12 kills and four blocks, while senior Nicole Kincade continued her strong play with 11 kills, zero errors, four blocks, one ace and one assist. The two combined to go 12-for-15 in the first set, when Princeton seized control of the match and never let go.
Princeton hit efficiently throughout the night, with every starting hitter producing at least a .390 attack percentage. Sophomore Cara Mataliano, a reigning first-team All-Ivy player, had 11 kills and only two errors, while classmate Brittany Ptak and seven kills and three blocks from the middle. Freshman Kelly Matthews, making her Ivy League debut, added two kills and five digs in the win.
Sophomore Lauren Miller, now in her second season as the starting setter, had 39 assists and helped Princeton hit .439 for the match. Junior Sarah Daschbach, one of the league leaders in digs, had eight digs, two short of Peterkin's team-best 10.
Princeton returns to the court Saturday at 5 pm to take on Columbia, which also moved to 2-0 in the Ivy League with a 3-0 win at Penn.
