A struggle of a first half from the field put Princeton in too big a hole from which to emerge as George Mason handed the Tigers their first loss of the season, 63-60 Sunday afternoon in Northern Virginia. Princeton made just two of its first 17 field goal attempts, helping the Patriots get out to a lead as large as 17 points at 24-7 with less than eight minutes to go in the first half. The Tigers warmed up after the break, making four of their first five field goal attempts of the second half to pull within seven at 36-29 with 16 minutes left to complete the comeback. Princeton kept at it as the second half wore on, falling behind by 11 points inside of three minutes to go before going on a 9-1 run in a minute's time to make it a three-point game at 60-57. The Tigers had the ball with the chance to tie on a possession that began with 22 seconds to go, but a well-contested Steven Cook 3-pointer hit iron and a George Mason rebound sealed it. |

Two George Mason plays with a short shot clock dealt a blow to Princeton's momentum in the comeback attempt. The first came with Princeton having cut the George Mason deficit to three points with 12 minutes and change to go in the second half. GMU had a 5-second shot clock after a Tiger-tipped ball out of bounds, and the Patriots' Marquise Moore slashed to the rim to put the Patriots back up five at 42-37. The second came with 4:33 to play after a Pete Miller block had given GMU the ball out of bounds and a four-second shot clock. The Patriots' Patrick Holloway scored on that play to put his team back up eight at 56-48. |
