Porter Named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year; Seven Honored
November 19, 2014 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (11/19/14) - Cameron Porter was named the Ivy League Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year and seven players were named to All-Ivy League, the most in the league, it was announced by the league office today, Nov. 19.
Porter was a unanimous first-team selection for the second consecutive season and was joined on the first team by junior midfielder Brendan McSherry and junior defender Josh Miller. Senior defender Andrew Mills was named second-team All-Ivy, while senior defender Joe Saitta, senior midfielder Myles McGinley and junior goalkeeper Ben Hummel earned Honorable Mention spots.
Porter was not only the team and league's leading scorer but he leads the NCAA in points (34), points per game (2.00), goals (15) and goals per game (0.88). Unfortunately Porter will unlikely earn the 2014 scoring crown as the NCAA Tournament gets underway tomorrow without Princeton. Porter scored a goal in 12 of Princeton's 17 games this season and had the game-winning goals against Loyola, Harvard, American and Yale. He was 6-for-6 in penalty kicks and had his most impressive outing against Rutgers with a five-point game on two goals and one assist. Porter was twice named the Ivy League Player of the Week, and earned two national Player of the Week honors this season. Porter caps his career with 75 points on 31 gaols and 13 assists in 67 games. He ranks fourth all-time in points, along with current assistant coach Jesse Marsch with 75, fourth in career goals and 12th in career assists. Porter is the fifth Tiger to earn Player of the Year honors joining head coach Jim Barlow in 1990, Michael Nugent in 2001, Darren Spicer in 2004, Antoine Hoppenot in 2010.
McSherry finished third on the team in scoring with 10 points on three goals and four assists. He scored on his only shot on goal in a tie at Boston University in September and had two assists in a 5-2 win over Rutgers in early October. Against both Harvard and Penn, McSherry scored a goal and an assist. This is McSherry's first all-Ivy League honor.
Miller takes home his second straight first-team All-Ivy League honor. After missing the first three games of the season, Miller came in and started the next 14 at center back. He earned an assist in a 2-2 tie at Boston University and helped to hold teams to 1.29 goals per game and to an 11.2 shooting percentage.
Mills earns his first All-Ivy League honor as a defender. He was named the Ivy League Player of the Week on November 3 after scoring the game-winning goal in the 87th minute at Cornell in a must-win game for the Tigers. Mills also earned an assist in a win over Rutgers in early October.
McGinley started all 17 games and had a team-high six assists. He had two assists in a 5-4 win at Seton Hall and earned single assists at FDU and against Georgetown before closing out the year with assists in wins over Penn and Yale. This is McGinley's second league honor.
Saitta started in 15 games at right back and proved his toughness game in and game out. He tallied the game-winning goal against Brown and tallied the team's lone goal in a 1-1 tie at Columbia.
Hummel started in all 17 games in goal and finished the season with an 11-3-3 record. He posted six shutouts - against St. John's, Drexel, Binghamon, Loyola, American and Yale. Hummel made 67 saves in 17 games for a .744 save percentage and a 1.30 goals against average.
Princeton and Dartmouth are the co-Ivy League Champions. The Tigers are the only team in the nation on a nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1) and it will end there as the team was not invited to the NCAA Tournament, finishing the season with an 11-3-3 record.2014 All-Ivy League Teams
