PRINCETON, N.J. (11/26/14) - Michigan State visits Hobey Baker Rink for the first time as the Princeton men's hockey team hosts the Spartans for a two-game series on Thanksgiving weekend. The teams will face off on Friday, Nov. 28 and Saturday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
EYE ON THE TIGERSPrinceton returns home for the first time since Nov. 7 & 8 and just the second time this season. The Tigers look to turn around a five-game losing skid that came after Princeton won its home opener versus Cornell. Last weekend Princeton was shutout 3-0 at St. Lawrence and 4-0 at Clarkson. The Tigers average one goal per game and are allowing 3.75 goals per game. The power play is 4 of 25 (11.4%) and the penalty kill is 34 of 43 (79.1%).
Senior defender Aaron Ave and sophomore Ben Foster sit atop the scoring column with three points apiece. Ave has scored twice and adds one assist, while Foster has one goal and two helpers. Senior Aaron Kesselman adds two assists as well, while 14 others have a single point. Sophomore Colton Phinney has started in seven of eight games and has a .909 save percentage and a 3.51 goals against average.
THE PRINCETON/MICHIGAN STATE SERIES
Michigan State is unbeaten in the series with Princeton, 5-0. The teams first met in 1959 with the Spartans taking a 7-4 game at the RPI Tournament in Troy, N.Y. The teams met last season in East Lansing with the Spartans winning 4-1 and 8-2. Garrett Skrbich has the most points against MSU with a goal and an assist, while Aaron Ave has a goal and Aaron Kesselman has an assist. Colton Phinney was in net for the first game and made 23 saves and allowed four goals.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
Michigan State makes it first trip to Princeton this weekend and just fourth visit to an Ivy League campus. The Spartans opened the Big 10 season last weekend, splitting at Ohio State, and are 4-7 overall. Michigan State has made two previous trips out East this season, going 1-3 with losses at BU, Lowell and splitting with UNH. The team has the 10th best penalty kill in the nation, at 90% but the power play is converting a clip of 11.1%, just 5 of 45.
Senior Matt Berry and junior Michael Ferrantino lead the team with 10 points apiece. Berry has six goals and four assists while Ferrantino has five goals and assists each. Sophomore and St. Louis draft pick Mackenzie MacEachern adds four goals and five assists while Travis Walsh is the leading scoring defenseman with six points on two goals and four assists. Junior Jake Hildebrand is the only netminder the Spartans have used this season. He has a .917 save percentage and a 2.40 GAA.
