PRINCETON, N.J. (11/8/14) - In the big picture view of ECAC Weekend No. 1 for Ron Fogarty, Princeton came away with two points and made a strong statement with its win Friday over Cornell.
Focusing on that view makes Saturday's 5-0 loss to No. 4 Colgate a little easier to take.
Princeton fell behind on a power-play goal within the first three minutes and was unable to shut down the Raiders, who themselves had lost 5-0 to Quinnipiac Friday night.
Jake Kulevich put the Raiders on the board early at 4:37 when he wound up from the point after Evan Peterson won a draw back in the right circle. Kulevich received the puck and sent it through traffic for the goal. Peterson was a factor in the next goal, a short-handed goal, at 14:39 with help from Darcy Murphy and Kevin Lough. Lough dumped the puck into the corner and Murphy picked it up and slid the puck to the top of the circle to Peterson.
Tyson Spink scored two goals within 2:26 to expand Colgate's lead to 4-0 in the second period. The first came at 15:53, a 5x4 power-play goal and the second at 18:19. The second goal was a quick transition goal after Princeton had one of its best chances to score. Senior Tucker Brockett had a shot hit the pipe, was the recipient of the rebound and ripped another shot that was slowed down by Charlie Finn and then squirted behind him into the paint before it was kicked away by a Raider.
Spiro Goulakos made it 5-0 with a power-play goal at 2:13 of the third period.
Princeton took advantage of a late penalty and got on the board with a 6x4 extra-attacker goal. Sophomore Tommy Davis took a shot that rebounded into the corner and collected by senior Aaron Kesselman. Kesselman sent the puck back into the slot for Davis and he fired on net where it was redirected by junior Jonathan Liau on the doorstep.
In a game that saw 24 total penalties, Colgate was 2 for 9 on the power play and Princeton was 1 for 8.
Sophomore Colton Phinney made 35 saves in goal for the Tigers, while Finn finished the night with 22 saves as shots fell 40-23 in favor of the Raiders.
Princeton hits the road for the next two weekends, making its first stop in Albany to face Rensselaer and Union, Nov. 14 & 15.
