PRINCETON, N.J. (12/10/14) - The Princeton men's hockey team will face its toughest opponent this weekend when it makes the trip to Minnesota to face No. 3 Minnesota State in a pair of games at the Verizon Wireless Center.
EYE ON THE TIGERSPrinceton heads to Minnesota with a 2-9-1 overall record and looking to halt a three-game losing skid. The Tigers most recently lost a one-goal game to No. 9 Harvard followed by a 4-2 loss to Dartmouth. Three players have five points apiece to sit atop the scoring column. Senior Aaron Kesselman score in both games last weekend and adds three assists. Sophomore Ben Foster also has two goals and three helpers, while junior Kyle Rankin has a team-high four assists and one goal. Junior Jonathan Liau has a team-best three goals and one assist for four points, while senior defender Aaron Ave chips in four points as well. Sophomore Colton Phinney has started but all but one game in net. He has a .918 save percentage and a 3.333 goals against average. Phinney made a career-high 51 saves on Friday against Harvard.
THE PRINCETON/MINNESOTA STATE SERIES
Princeton holds a 2-1 edge in the all-time series with Mankato. The teams first met in 2006, with Princeton winning 4-3. The teams met just once in Minnesota with the Mavericks winning 6-1 in 2007. In 2008 it was the Tigers that claimed the home victory, 5-1.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS
Minnesota State is ranked No. 3 in both national polls with a 12-4 record. The team dropped from second place after splitting with Alaska last week, thought the loss was in overtime. The team has the third best scoring offense in the county, averaging 3.88 goals per game. Leading the charge is senior Matt Leitner who has 17 points on five goals and 12 assists. Junior Bryce Gervais has scored a team-high 10 goals and adds six assists, while classmate and Pittsburgh draft pick Teddy Blueger adds 16 points as well. Six other players have 10 or more points. In net is Islanders draft pick and junior Stephon Williams. He has started in 12 of the team's 16 games and is 11-2 with a 1.86 GAA and a .914 save percentage. Sophomore Cole Huggins earned the other four starts and is 1-2 with a 4.16 GAA and a .780 save percentage.
