HAMDEN, Conn. (12/27/14) - No. 14 ranked Quinnipiac claimed a 2-0 victory over Princeton in Game 1 of the home-and-home series between the two ECAC travel partners on Saturday, Dec 27 at TD Bank Sports Center.
It marked the first game back from the holiday break for both teams, a 15-day break for Princeton and 20 for Quinnipiac.
Princeton dominated puck possession to start the game and had the first three shots on goal before the Bobcats countered.
Quinnipiac's first goal at 15:41 of the first period went under review but called a solid goal by leading scorer Matthew Peca. Peca skated in for the backdoor goal on a pass from Soren Jonzzon from the left point. Landon Smith earned the secondary assist.
The goal sparked a fire for the Bobcats, as they started to put more rubber on netminder Colton Phinney. A couple chances Phinney did not have to face were a shot that hit the pipe and a 2x1 where Travis St. Denis fanned on the shot.
The Tigers again started off strong, with three great scoring chances in the first five minutes of the second period. Freshman Ryan Berlin had a chance on the right post before a shot in the slot, sophomore Ben Foster had a backhanded effort with freshman Eric Robinson getting stuffed on the rebound. Off the next draw, junior Kyle Rankin hit the pipe.
One of Phinney's best stops was on a Peca no-look shot as Peca intercepted a pass and made Phinney put down his pad.
Bo Pieper had a highlight-reel goal as the Bobcats gained a 2-0 lead at 9:46. Sam Anas sent a cross-ice pass to Devon Toews at the right point. Toews ripped a shot that was redirected mid-air by Pieper as he skated towards the left post.
Princeton's final quality scoring chance of the period came shorthanded. Netminder Michael Garteig came out to play the puck but sent it to directly to freshman David Hallisey. Hallisey fired but Garteig made the pad save inside the face-off circle.
A scoreless third period saw just nine combined shots on goal.
With 2:09 remaining, Princeton called a timeout and decided to pull Phinney in favor of the extra attacker. The Tigers couldn't get a shot on goal before having to replace Phinney in net for the final 15 seconds after a major and game misconduct penalty on sophomore Tommy Davis.
Garteig earned his third shutout of the season making 19 stops, while Phinney made 22 on the opposite end.
Neither team was able to convert on the power play, with Quinnipiac going 0 for 4 and Princeton coming up 0 for 3.
The teams will battle it out again tomorrow at Hobey Baker Rink. Game time is at 4:02 p.m., and will air live on ESPNU.
