PRINCETON, N.J. (12/5/14) - Sophomore Tommy Davis and freshman Joe Grabowski both scored their first career goals as the Princeton men's hockey team fell 4-3 to No. 9 Harvard on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink. In net, sophomore Colton Phinney made a career-high 51 saves.
The Crimson gained a 2-0 lead on goals from Brayden Jaw and Jake Horton but the Tigers answered with two goals in the second to take the final intermission in a 2-2 deadlock.
Down 2-0, Princeton rallied with two transition goals in the second frame.
Freshman Eric Robinson skated into the zone and left the puck off for sophomre and leading scorer Ben Foster. Foster facing a trap on the boards sent the puck back to the left point to senior defender Aaron Ave. Ave sent a cross ice pass to Davis who went five hole on Steve Michalek at 10:36.
With 1:44 left in the period, Princeton knotted the game at 2-2. After a Harvard chance freshman David Hallisey collected the puck, circled around the back of the net and broke the puck out to junior Kyle Rankin at the defensive blue. Rankin found freshman Max Becker along the right boards and the two skated in on a 2x1 with Becker's shot getting saved. The trailing Grabowski skated in and buried the rebound.
Harvard regained the lead less than two minutes into the third period with its first of two power-play goals. Patrick McNally lifted the puck towards the net and it deflected off of Jimmy Vesey in the circle. As Vesey collided with Grabowski and fell into the paint, Sean Malone got the puck on the back door and flipped it over the shoulder of Phinney.
Five minutes later the Crimson had a two-goal lead on their second power-play goal. Tyler Moy tracked down a Princeton clear at the checkered red and Malone picked up the puck and sent it back to Moy on the right boards. Moy skated in, deked a defender and went between the legs of Phinney.
Senior Aaron Kesselman made it a one-goal game at 16:41 with his first goal of the season. Sophomore Garrett Skrbich had two defenders in a trap to the right of Michalek. Senior Tucker Brockett came in for support and got the puck out of the corner and to Kessselman position at the left pipe for the goal.
With 45 seconds left, Phinney was pulled for the extra attakcer but the Tigers couldn't get the tying goal, as Harvard improves to 8-1-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the league.
Princeton falls to 2-8-1 overall and 1-6 in the ECAC and will host Dartmouth, tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The Big Green lost 2-1 in overtime at No. 15 Quinnipiac this evening.
