Fencers Sweep Sacred Heart Duals
December 07, 2014 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Princeton's men's and women's fencing teams swept Sacred Heart, Penn State, Vassar and NYU in a series of dual matches Sunday at Sacred Heart.
Both teams defeated Sacred Heart, Vassar and NYU in traditional five-touch bouts with nine per weapon, with neither Princeton team allowing any of those three opponents more than 11 wins out of the 27 bouts. Individual results and team scores are below.
Against Penn State, Princeton fenced in a team-rally format, with one bout at a time until one fencer gets to five, 10, 15 and so on up to 45. On the women's side, Princeton beat Penn State in foil 45-34 and in épée 45-30, with the Nittany Lions taking the saber 45-34. The men beat Penn State 45-35 in épée and 45-36 in foil while Penn State won 45-33 in saber.
Princeton fencers also competed at the North American Cup event in Dallas, Texas, which began Friday and runs through Monday. Anna Van Brummen won the women's épée event in a field of 122 fencers, defeating teammate Katharine Holmes, who is taking time off from fencing for Princeton to prepare for a run at the 2016 Olympics, 13-12 in the final. Ambika Singh took bronze in the Division I foil competition while Ashley Tsue placed ninth, Sharon Gao placed 12th and Taylor Chin placed 45th. In the men's épée event, Jack Hudson placed 12th and Alex House 52nd.
The Tigers will be away from competition until Jan. 31, when two days of duals hosted by Northwestern will begin.
