Women's Tennis Spring Schedule Announced
December 08, 2014 | Women's Tennis
2014-15 Schedule
Last May, the Princeton women's tennis program won its first NCAA tournament match, defeating Arizona State at Alabama. As the Tigers prepare to defend their Ivy League title and earn another NCAA bid, the 2015 spring slate will send Princeton back to Tuscaloosa for the spring opener.
January
The schedule will get underway for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, which will bring Princeton, Virginia Tech and Syracuse to Alabama. The Tigers will open against Virginia Tech on Jan. 24 and face either Syracuse or Alabama the next day. This will be Princeton's fourth trip to the event and first since 2011, with the Tigers having gone to Baylor, Northwestern and Florida State over the event's first three editions. If the Tigers are able to win two matches and gain a berth in the National Team Indoor (Feb. 7-10 at Virginia), it would be a program first. The month will conclude with a trip to Northern California for matches on Jan. 29 and 31 at Stanford and Saint Mary's, respectively.
Initial team rankings for the 2014-15 season won't be released until Jan. 6, but Princeton's January schedule will at least feature the teams that ended last season ranked nationally at No. 8 (Stanford), No. 47 (Saint Mary's), and No. 56 (Virginia Tech), along with either No. 6 (Alabama) or No. 64 (Syracuse). Princeton ended last season ranked No. 36.
February
Feb. 6-8 will bring Princeton to Cornell for the ECAC Championship as Princeton looks for its first title in that event. As of now, the ECAC field will include Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton and Yale. Later in the month, Princeton will have its lone home non-conference match of the season as Rutgers meets the Tigers in a dual for the 35th straight season on Feb. 17. That weekend, Princeton will head to Montgomery, Alabama for the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic, in which the Tigers last appeared in 2012. Alabama, Boise State, DePaul, Ohio State, Texas Tech, Tulane and Yale will join Princeton in the Blue Gray field with each team playing three matches. The month will close with Princeton heading to Memphis for Tigers-against-Tigers match on Feb. 28.
Though much of the month of February depends on how the ECAC and Blue Gray draws play out, Princeton has seven ITA-ranked teams from last season's final rankings on the possible docket, including No. 6 Alabama, No. 30 Texas Tech, No. 37 Ohio State, No. 39 Columbia, No. 41 Memphis, No. 49 Yale, and No. 50 DePaul.
March
The March slate will begin with Princeton's spring trip to Southern California with matches at Long Beach State on March 18, at San Diego State on March 20 and aganist Oklahoma State at SDSU on March 21 before the Ivy slate begins March 28 at Penn. Oklahoma State ended last season ranked No. 21 and LBSU ended ranked No. 40.
April
After the Penn match, the Ivy League schedule is all the Tigers have in April, with matches against Brown and Yale at the Lenz Tennis Center April 3-4, at Dartmouth and Harvard April 11-12, at Columbia April 17 and at Lenz against Cornell on April 19. The Ivy ended last season with four Ivy teams ranked, from No. 36 Princeton to No. 54 Harvard.
Princeton returns every player who competed in the NCAA tournament matches against Arizona State and Alabama, matches the Tigers reached after completing a 7-0 Ivy League season that saw current senior Lindsay Graff earn Ivy League Player of the Year and first-team All-Ivy honors in singles and doubles and current sophomore Alanna Wolff claim first-team doubles recognition in doubles with Graff and second-team singles honors.
