Temple, Penn to Host Fencers for Weekend of Competition
February 17, 2014 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Princeton's fencing teams will head to Philadelphia for two days of meets this weekend as the NCAA competitions draw closer.
Saturday, Princeton will compete in a day of dual meets hosted by Temple. The schedule is as follows:
(1) Women: 8:30 a.m., vs. (6) Penn State; 10 a.m., vs. (8) Temple; 11:30 a.m., vs. Duke; 1:30 p.m. vs. (10) St. John's
(5) Men: 8:30 a.m. vs. (10) Duke; 10 a.m. vs. (2) Penn State; 11:30 a.m. vs. (7) Penn; 1:30 p.m. vs. (8) St. John's
Coming off their fifth straight Ivy League championship, Princeton's women enter the competition as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation according to the CollegeFencing360.com poll, which is used as the NCAA's official ranking. The women have won 47 straight dual matches dating back to last February. Princeton's men enter ranked No. 5 in the nation after being one touch away from sharing an Ivy League title.
Sunday will bring Princeton back to Philadelphia for the Penn-hosted National Squad Championships. It's the third straight year Princeton has competed in the event, which was in New York in 2012 and saw Princeton win top billing in all three women's weapons while the men took second in epee and fifth in foil and saber. Last year at Ohio State, Princeton sent men's and women's epee squads and a women's saber squad, taking first in both women's weapons and fourth in men's epee.
At this year's competition, Princeton will join with Penn, Yale, NYU, North Carolina, Stevens, Boston College, Brandeis, Vassar, Ohio State, Haverford, Fairleigh Dickinson and Temple in sending competitors. Bouts will begin at 9 a.m. and run through 6:30 p.m.
The teams are the defending combined NCAA champions, a status the Tigers will begin defending at the NCAA Regionals at Lafayette on March 8 as they aim to qualify a full slate for the NCAA finals Mar. 20-23 at Ohio State.
