After Strong Early Push, Women's Lights Claim Bronze At Eastern Sprints
May 04, 2014 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
Wisconsin was able to move past Princeton for second place in 6:30.876, though Tiger head coach Paul Rassam thinks that his team's push for gold may have ultimately caused it to earn bronze. And it was that push that he was most proud about.
"Our 1V swung for the fences, taking a very aggressive race against the top seed Radcliffe," he said. "We led the first 400 meters. Perhaps that cost us the silver. Maybe we extended ourselves a little too much. I don't know. I'd rather go for it like that 10 out of 10 times.
"I'll see if the athletes agree or want to take a more conservative approach at IRAs," he added. "I don't know, but I think next time around we can swing big but also maintain our speed a bit better in four weeks time. One thing is clear, the league is deep and fast this year and it's exciting."
Both the 2V and the V4 missed the medal stand, but Rassam is confident that his group will be ready to compete for multiple medals when they reach Mercer Lake at the end of May for the IRA National Championships.
"We look forward to putting together a strong four from the 2V group for IRAs and refocusing in the 1V8 on how to execute a more perfect piece," he said.
