Gregoire Named to Canada's Squad for FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup
July 17, 2014 | Women's Soccer
Incoming Princeton freshman Vanessa Gregoire was named to Canada's roster for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup to be played in August in her home country.
The 16-team event will run from August 5-24 with host Canada opening play on the first day of the event against Ghana in Toronto. Group games against Finland and North Korea will follow, with the top two teams from that four-team group advancing to the knockout stage. Three other venues will be in play, including Edmonton and Moncton, New Brunswick, with the final being held in Montreal, Gregoire's home area.
The full roster announced by Canada Soccer can be found here.
The U-20 World Cup also serves as a test run for the host country of the following year's Women's World Cup, which will be held in June and July 2015 from Vancouver to Moncton. Another Tiger, Diana Matheson '08, who has played with the full Canadian national team since 2003, has played in all seven of Canada's competitions in 2014, getting goals against Italy and Ireland in the Cyprus Women's Cup in March. The full Canadian national team has two more friendlies set for this year, both against Japan in October in Edmonton and Vancouver.
Gregoire and the 2014 Tiger squad will open their season Sept. 5 against Rutgers on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
