PRINCETON, N.J. (9/10/14) - Junior goalkeeper Ben Hummel made a career-high seven saves for the Princeton men's soccer team as the Tigers played to a scoreless draw with St. John's on Wednesday night in the home opener on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Princeton (0-1-1) outshot St. John's (0-3-2) 13-11 in the game, but the shots-on-goal differential fell in the Red Storm favor, 9-4. In addition to Hummel's seven saves, two saves came from defenders stepping up to protect the clean slate.
"I thought it was a really good game," Princeton head coach Jim Barlow said. "Both teams were going all out for a win in the overtimes and the game never slowed down. I think there's a lot of really good things to build on for our team. Considering where we are, this is our second game, and their fifth game, so for us to keep pushing and putting our team together, figuring out responsibilities, getting game-fit, while also trying to get results is a big challenge in the early season. It's not easy when you schedule really good teams like St. John's, but I thought our guys handled the challenges very well."
The Tigers had the better looks in the first half, dominating possession with some nice runs. They were able to get in front of defenders but couldn't finish off the attack.
Both teams started to create more opportunities in the second half. Gabriel Camara sent a blast in on goal that Hummel made a terrific save on with oustretched hands. Teammate Daniel Herrera followed up with a shot off the left pipe in the 70th minute.
Two more Hummel saves came early in the first overtime, with Camara and Herrera threatening.
Junior Brendan McSherry had the final chance in the first overtime but he shot was just wide as the 10-second countdown was underway. Junior Andrew Doar started the excitement in the second overtime with a run up the left flank before centering to Porter for the header, that went just high of the crossbar. Porter gave it another go in the 108th minute when he took off up the left side and fired on goal, but goalie Jordan Stagmiller came out to cut off the angle and made the stop on the ground.
Princeton will head to Seton Hall in search of its first win on Sunday, September 14 for a 1 p.m. game with the Pirates.
