McCourt Set to Open ITA All-America Qualifying Draw Monday
September 29, 2014 | Men's Tennis
Princeton senior Zack McCourt will open the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships Monday at the University of Tulsa against Guillermo Nunez of TCU.
McCourt, ranked No. 71 in the nation in the ITA preseason rankings, is seeded in the 17-24 range among the 128 players in the qualifying draw, and McCourt will need to win three matches between Monday and Wednesday in order to gain one of the 16 berths in the 64-player main draw. Nunez was unranked on the ITA preseason chart.
The McCourt-Nunez match is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. ET with the winner facing either Victor Pugliese of Monmouth or Albert Wagner of Louisville, both unranked in the preseason and unseeded in the draw. The player that emerges from that foursome will face either Andreas Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech, Oliver Pramming of South Florida, Robbie Mudge of N.C. State or Jack Hamburg of Minnesota for a spot in the main draw. Bjerrehus is seeded 10th in the draw and was ranked 58th in the preseason, and Mudge was ranked 99th and is unseeded in the draw. Both Pramming and Hamburg were unranked and are unseeded players in the qualifying draw.
McCourt has never faced any of the players who would stand in his path to a main-draw berth, and this is McCourt's first appearance in the ITA All-America tournament.
