Porter and Doar Score as Tigers Lose Lead at FDU, Fall 3-2 in 2OT
September 06, 2014 | Men's Soccer
TEANECK, N.J. (9/5/14) – Senior Cameron Porter and junior Andrew Doar scored the first Princeton men's soccer goals of the year but it wouldn't be enough as the Tigers dropped a 3-2 double overtime game to Fairleigh Dickinson in the season opener on Friday, Sept. 5.
The Tigers had a 2-0 lead and saw that advantage slip away against an experienced FDU squad that had two games already under its belt.
It didn't take Porter very long to continue is scoring success as the team's 2013 leading scorer as he put Princeton on the board in the fourth minute. It was Doar who started the play in the defending third of the field. He nudged the ball between two FDU players to Nico Hurtado who dribbled the ball to center field before putting it in the center of the field for Porter. Porter saw Myles McGinley sprinting down the right flank and kicked it to him and McGinley put the ball right at Porter's foot at the top of the 6-yard box.
A goal kick led to Princeton's second goal in the 56th minute. Brendan McSherry headed down the Ben Hummel goal kick and Thomas Sanner flicked it to the left side where Doar settled it and chipped in into the box. The ball just skimmed off the top of goalkeeper Aleksander Djekic's fingertips and into the right corner of the goal. He would leave the game with zero saves and two goals allowed with Matthew Weigner taking his place.
All three of FDU's goals came off of set pieces.
The first was a free kick from the very tip of the 18-yard box in the 64th minute. Sam Durkot took the ball and nicked it off of the man-made wall and it deflected in behind Hummell.
Less than 15 minutes later it was a tie game as Nico Wright converted a penalty shot after it was deemed he was taken down in the box by sophomore Patrick Barba.
It was a gut wrenching finish 2:02 into the second overtime when a bobbled ball led to the golden goal. Enver Caymaz lofte a free kick from about 25 yards out that Hummel collected but the slick ball got loose and before he or the defense could get to it Casey Abelein did and put it away to end the game then-and-there.
FDU had a 16-8 shot advantage in the game, while Princeton had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Hummel made four saves in net for the Tigers, while Weigner did not make a save in the final 42:25 as FDU improves to 1-2 on the season.
Princeton looks to turn things around and it turns around and heads back down the New Jersey Turnpike, when it hosts St. John's on Wednesday, Sept. 10 in the home opener. Game time is at 7 p.m., on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
