No. 5 Princeton Falls 7-2 To Top-Ranked Harvard In 2015 Ivy Opener
January 11, 2015 | Women's Squash
The match had plenty of early excitement, especially on the main court, as Princeton All-America senior Nicole Bunyan was locked in a thriller with Katie Tutrone on Court 1. Bunyan won the opener, but Tutrone took the next two to open a 2-1 lead. Bunyan forced extra points before winning 13-11 and setting up an absolute thriller in the fifth game.
Bunyan got out to an early 4-2 lead, but a pair of strokes against her helped Tutrone grab a three-point lead. The Crimson sophomore, younger sister of Princeton men's player Taylor Tutrone, would eventually earn multiple match balls, but Bunyan's relentless play evened the game at 10. The two traded both points and let calls before Bunyan capitalized and claimed a 15-13 win.
While the victory excited a capacity crowd on the main court, Harvard had built its lead with wins at both No. 6 and No. 9. Princeton junior Rachel Leizman, one of the heroes of the Tigers' 5-4 comeback win over Harvard en route to the 2013 Ivy League title, tried to claw out of a 2-0 hole, but she eventually fell in four games.
Reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year Maria Elena Ubina was impressive in her 12-10, 11-7, 11-8 victory over Haley Mendez at the No. 2 position to remain undefeated this season.
Again, however, Harvard won the remaining matches during the shift to open a 4-2 lead, and it swept the final shift to clinch the 7-2 win. Senior Amanda Sobhy, winner of the last three women's collegiate individual championships, defeated Princeton freshman Olivia Fiechter 3-0 at the No. 1 position; Sobhy will try to end her collegiate career on this same court, as Jadwin will serve as host of the 2015 individual championships (Feb. 27-March 1).
Princeton senior captain Alex Lunt put forth a good showing at No. 4, topping Alyssa Mehta in the opening game before losing three close ones in a 3-1 loss.
The Tigers will try to even their Ivy League record Sunday at 2:30 when they host the Dartmouth Big Green in the second half of a men's/women's doubleheader. Both matches will be streamed live on the Ivy Digital Network.
