Women's Tennis Takes Syracuse to Final Match in ITA Kick-Off Finale
January 25, 2015 | Women's Tennis
As the Princeton women's tennis team did the day before with Virginia Tech, the Tigers took their opponent to the final singles match on court. Syracuse won that decisive match and took the afternoon, 4-3.
The match wrapped Princeton's fourth participation in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, which began in 2009 and in which Princeton participated in each of the event's first three years. Alabama hosted Princeton, Syracuse and Virginia Tech as one of 16 sites for the event.
Princeton won the doubles point and picked up the first singles win as Katrine Steffensen held her Syracuse opponent, Nicole Mitchell, to two games in a straight-set win. Syracuse came back to win three straight singles matches to take a 3-2 lead before Lindsay Graff beat Amanda Rodgers 7-5, 6-4 on court one to force the match on court two, between Amanda Muliawan for the Tigers and Valeria Salazar for the Orange, to be the decider.
Muliawan and Salazar split the first two sets, with Salazar taking the first before Muliawan bounced back to force a third set. Salazar took a 5-3 lead in that decisive frame before Muliawan won three of the next four games to tie it at 6-6, but Salazar won the day's final game to secure the match for the Orange.
