January 26, 2015 | Women's Fencing
Katharine Holmes, who is between stints fencing for Princeton while pursuing a 2016 Olympic bid, earned the top American finish at the Épée World Cup in Spain over the weekend.
Holmes finished 14th of 233 competitors, winning her first three matches in the direct-elimination portion of the event before Germany's Ricarda Multerer defeated Holmes 12-11 in the Round of 16. Junior Anna Van Brummen advanced to the Round of 64 before falling 15-14 to Germany's Britta Heidemann, who has won medals at the last three Olympic Games.
Both Holmes and Van Brummen fenced for the U.S. in the event's team competition, placing 11th after coming up a touch short against Ukraine, 41-40, in the Round of 16. In the classification rounds, the Americans defeated Venezuela 34-27 before losing to South Korea 45-40 and wrapping up the competition with a 40-33 win over Germany to finalize their place.
Princeton will return to competition this weekend at the Northwestern Duals Saturday and Sunday.
