EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton looks to even the series with Union and Rensselaer this weekend, as the teams come to Hobey Baker Rink. The Tigers lost on the road to both teams in mid-November. Princeton is 2-12-1 overall, and is in the middle of a six-game losing skid, after dropping a pair of games to travel partner and No. 14 ranked Quinnipiac before the New Year. Senior Aaron Kesselman and sophomore Ben Foster have five points apiece with two goals and three assists each. Junior Kyle Rankin has a team-high four assists and adds one goal in four fewer games. Junior Jonathan Liau has scored a team-best three goals and has one assist. Sophomores Tommy Davis, Garrett Skrbich and freshman Joe Grabowski chip in three points apiece. Sophomore Colton Phinney has started in goal in all but one game and has a .916 save percentage and a 3.20 goals against average.
THE PRINCETON/UNION SERIES
Union holds a slight edge in the all-time series with Princeton, 27-22-6. The Dutchmen are unbeaten in the last 11 meetings, 9-0-2, with the Tigers last win coming during the 2009 ECAC Quarterfinal playoffs. Defenders Aaron Ave and Tom Kroshus both have a goal and an assist, while Michael Zajac has two helpers. Tyler Maugeri, who has yet to play this season, has two goals and two assists. Ben Halford played in goal in the first meeting this year and made 31 saves and allowed six goals. Colton Phinney is 0-2 with a .938 save percentage and a 2.68 GAA.
SCOUTING THE DUTCHMEN
Union is 10-7-2 overall and receiving votes in the USCHO national poll. With a 3-4 -1 mark in the ECAC, the Dutchmen are tied for seventh place. Union is coming off of a 3-3 tie with Boston University from Saturday and is 1-1-1 since returning from the holiday break, after a 3-2 loss at UConn and a 3-1 win over Sacred Heart. Sophomore Mike Vecchione and senior Daniel Ciampini are the team's leading scorers with 26 and 25 points, respectively. Vecchione has a team-high 17 assists, while Ciampini has scored a team-best 12 goals. Sophomore defender Jeff Taylor (PIT) adds 20 points, while freshman Spender Foo chips in 17 points and senior Max Novak 14. His numbers are slightly better than sophomore Alex Sakellarapoulos, who is 2-2-2 in goal with a .904 save percentage and a 2.85 GAA. Sakellarapoulos has been the starting netminder the last two games.
THE PRINCETON/RENSSELAER SERIES
Rensselaer owns a 65-33-10 lead in the all-time series, that began in 1952. The Engineers won the first meeting this year, a 3-1 game in November. The teams are even in the last five meetings, 2-2-1, while Princeton has a 6-3-1 edge when looking at the last 10 games. Tyler Maugeri leads all Tigers in points against Rensselaer with four. SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
Rensselaer, who's athletic director resigned on Tuesday to accept a position at Air Force, comes to Princeton on a eight-game losing skid. The Engineers are 6-15-1 overall and 4-5 in league play, and dropped a pair of games to Miami last weekend. Head coach Seth Appert has reinstated the team's four captains (Curtis Leonard, Luke Curadi, Mark McGowan and Matt Neal) who were suspended for last weekend's games. Freshman Drew Melanson returned to the lineup from an injury last weekend and sits atop the scoring column with 10 points on a team-high seven assists and three goals.
