PRINCETON, N.J. – Maddie Copeland netted a pair of second-half goals to lead the 20th-ranked Princeton field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Cornell on Senior Day at Bedford Field.
Improving to 9-6 (6-0 Ivy) on the season, Princeton clinched at least a share of the Ivy title for the 11th-straight year and the 21st time in 22 seasons. With Penn (13-2, 5-1 Ivy) upending Brown 2-1, the Tigers will have a chance to claim the title outright on Saturday, Nov. 7 in the regular season finale against the Quakers.
Closing out the game with a 14-8 shot advantage and a 7-4 edge in penalty corners, Princeton broke through in the 16th minute. Holding the ball on the left side of the circle, Teresa Benvenuti centered a pass to Jane Donio-Enscoe, who tipped in the game's first tally at 15:50.
With less than five minutes remaining in the first half, the Tigers doubled their lead. Getting the play started, Sophia Tornetta inserted a penalty corner to Ryan McCarthy. Looking to goal, McCarthy ripped a shot from the left side past sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Johnson at 31:51.
Continuing to apply pressure early in the second half, Tornetta tested Johnson in the 52nd minute, finding the goalie's blocker with a quick shot in front. In the 55th minute, Copeland put a pair of shots on target that forced a couple of Johnson saves before McCarthy sent a try wide of the left post.
Pushing forward in the 58th minute, Copeland padded the cushion. Corralling a Caro feed at the right post, Copeland tucked a shot into the near side of the cage to make it 3-0. Catching up to a long Benvenuti through-ball in the 61st minute, Copeland netted her 15th of the season, spinning and beating Johnson at 60:04 to cap off the scoring.
Playing all 70 minutes in net, Anya Gersoff finished with five saves. Johnson made four stops in the loss.
