Muliawan Scores Pair of Upsets to Advance in ITA All-America Singles Quals

Princeton senior Amanda Muliawan scored two upsets Tuesday to earn the right to keep playing at the Riviera/ITA All-America Championships at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.
Playing in the qualification singles bracket, Muliawan needs three wins over two days to get into the main draw. She achieved the first two of those Tuesday, upending the ITA's 50th-ranked player in the country, Texas A&M's Rutuja Bhosale 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and the 36th-ranked player, USC's Madison Westby, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the second round.
Next up for Muliawan is 32nd-ranked Belinda Woolcock of Florida at 2:45 p.m. ET Wednesday with the winner there going into the main draw. Muliawan was unranked on the ITA's preseason top-125 list.
First with Bhosale and then with Westby, Muliawan twice knocked off higher-ranked players than she had previously in her Tiger career. The highest-ranked opponent she'd defeated coming into today was last season against then-78th-ranked Kelsey Laurente of Oklahoma State.
